Drinking And Driving - Free Three-Paragraph Essay …
Distractions while driving a motor vehicle are very common and sometimes unavoidable, but
if there is one that can decrease one's chance of having an accident by up to four times, it
should become a law. Driving while distracted makes up about 25 percent of police report
cases on car crashes. It seems as though such an event can be so easily prevented. There
needs to be action taken about the 2,500 deaths and 330,000 injuries that occur each year
(Forsythe par. 8.). The risks are obviously the greatest factor here, and therefore, there needs to
be a law made banning cell phone use while driving.
In recent years, the amount of drivers who use cell phones while operating a motor vehicle
has increased dramatically. This is mainly from more people purchasing a cell phone, but it
still raises the risks for those people and other innocent victims whom they share the road with.
Distracations are the number one source of accidents among automobile drivers, and while
cell phones may not be listed as number one, it is by far the most prevalent source of crashes.
This is because drivers may first take their eyes off the road when driving to dial or text. Also,
some people can become too involved in their conversation, they lose their attention which
should be on the road. This can cause the driving to be severely impaired. These facts are
mind-numbing, but is very smal compared to the actual statistics.
If a driver is swerving in the road, it can the other drivers' responsibilities to make an
immediate phone call to the cops to inform them of a drunk driver. In some cases, though, it is
proven that these people trying to help could be just as dangerous asa the alcohol-impaired
driver. In recent studies, this has proved to be true. Forbes Magazine has said that reaction
time is slowed by nine percent when using cell phones. Also, it has been shown that 50
percent of the visual environment that is absorbed while driving is not processed at all ("Cell
Phone Dangers" par. 4.). Everyone knows the risks of driving. Using a cell phone even
increases these dangers, event though one might think they are perfectly alright to drive.
One of the most recent pieces of information to come out is that using one's cell phone while
driving is as risky or even more then drunk driving. There was a study done to prove this on a
closed-track. In the Summer 2006 Issue of Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors
and Ergonomics Society, a test was done to where, "Forty volunteers drove a simulated 24-mile
course four different times: while undistracted, while using a hand-held cell phone, while using
a hands-free cell phone, and while intoxicated. They were given a vodka-orange juice mixture to
induce a blood-alcohol content of 0.08. Partly, it was shown to be proven right, where people
using there cell phones were more dangerous because three of the participants rear-ended the
car in front of them without having any alcoholic beverages (Anderson par. 1-4.). This is
obviously an issue that needs to be confronted immediately, and there needs to be a solution.
